What does my journeyman's piece (Gesellenstück) as a carpenter have to do with my current work as a software and AI developer?
20 years ago (and even before then), CNC milling machines were a major talking point. Put the MDF board on. Load the program. Finished workpiece.
At the time, I worked for a master carpenter who had a clearly defensive stance on CNC. He believed CNC machines would lead to the extinction of the carpentry trade. As a consequence, he refused all computer-controlled machines. A pure purist. Computers = bad. Manual labor = good.
The topic of "AI" is a bit like what the CNC mill was to the crafts 20 or 30 years ago, just for the office. It helps increase productivity and manufacture workpieces that would not have been possible at all without CNC.
But here too, there are people who are afraid: "AI" would soon take over everything. "AI" is viewed as a nebulous opponent instead of a partner. Here too, one or two people refuse to engage with the topic, just as one or two carpenters refused CNC mills 20 years ago.
I had some fun looking up what became of the business 20 years ago that absolutely refused to work with CNC.
